Wales produces a remarkable volume and diversity of wool, yet under current systems, farmers often receive only a fraction of its true value. For many, wool accounts for barely 1% of the economic value of keeping sheep, despite being a fibre that is naturally hard-wearing, carbon-storing, breathable, fire-resistant, and endlessly recyclable.
We want to be part of the change that restores the value of Welsh wool, championing its unique qualities, elevating its story, and ensuring that the people who grow, grade, process and craft this extraordinary fibre are recognised and rewarded.

A Bespoke Supply Chain
Farm & shearing
Sheep are shorn either by a professional shearer or the farmer themselves. Fleeces are carefully collected and packed into sacks. When destined for British Wool, the fleeces are transported to the nearest Welsh British Wool depot for processing.
Grading
At the British Wool depot, fleeces are hand-sorted to assess quality, breed, and cleanliness before being assigned a formal grade. Each fleece may undergo testing and is then stored in bales, ready for sale at auction.
Scouring
Fleeces are cleaned to remove impurities such as dirt, grease, and excess lanolin. This process prepares the wool for further processing and ensures consistency in quality.
Carding & Combing
Cleaned fleece is separated and brushed using large roller systems. Wool destined for woollen-spun yarn undergoes carding, while worsted-spun yarn requires an additional combing step to align fibres and create a smoother, stronger yarn.
Spinning
The wool fibres are twisted and plied into continuous lengths, giving the yarn structural strength and durability suitable for a range of textile applications.
Dyeing
Colour can be introduced at multiple stages: post-scouring, at the yarn stage, or as a piece-dyeing process after the fabric or garment has been produced.
Weaving & Knitting
Once spun, yarn can be either hand or machine knitted into garments, accessories, and products, or woven into lengths of fabric, blankets, or other textile items.

Wool can absorb 30% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp

Wool has a naturally very high ignition temperature between 570-600° other fibres ignite between 200-300°

The Campaign for Wool was launched in 2010 to educate consumers about the benefits of wool and help to support and grow the wool industry. Run by a coalition of industry groups convened by His Majesty King Charles III, when he was The Prince of Wales, the Campaign works to engage consumers through exciting fashion, interiors and artisan activities centring around Wool Month each year.
