About
WelshWool.org is a dedicated platform for Welsh wool, Welsh textile heritage and the future of wool production in Wales.
Founded by Welsh fashion designer Jayne Pierson, WelshWool.org was created from a simple observation: there is a growing appetite for wool, provenance and locally made products, but finding clear, connected information about Welsh wool and the businesses working within its supply chain can be difficult.
Wales has an extraordinary wool heritage. Wool was once one of the country’s most important industries, with communities, mills, skills and economies built around the journey from fleece to finished cloth. Today, that history remains visible through Wales’ surviving mills, makers, farmers and textile businesses, but the supply chain is smaller, more fragmented and increasingly difficult for new designers and businesses to navigate. (Museum Wales)
WelshWool.org exists to help reconnect those parts of the chain.
Our aim is to create a central, accessible resource where designers, brands, manufacturers, makers, educators, researchers and consumers can discover who is producing Welsh wool, where it comes from, how it is processed, who is manufacturing with it and how Welsh supply chains can be developed for contemporary products.
We believe provenance matters. We believe the story of a wool product should not begin at the point of sale — it should begin with the land, the sheep, the farmer and the fibre.
From Fleece to Finish
WelshWool.org will map and connect the Welsh wool ecosystem from:
Farmers → Fibre → Grading → Scouring → Spinning → Dyeing → Weaving & Knitting → Finishing → Designers & Makers → Brands → Customer
Where possible, we want to make these connections visible, traceable and accessible.
This includes highlighting Welsh farmers and fibre producers, mills, spinners, dyers, weavers, knitters, finishers, textile specialists, designers and manufacturers, alongside the skills and heritage that underpin them.
This approach reflects the increasing importance of provenance and traceability within the wool industry. British Wool’s current regional Welsh Wool scheme, for example, provides a framework for identifying wool grown and graded within Wales and connecting products back to their regional origin. Our ambition is to take that conversation further — by creating a living resource specifically focused on Wales.
